Tutorials Compliation

Whenever possible, I will create tutorial for the crafts that I have created along the way. Some are my own daring inventions, some are designed based on accumulated research reference. As I do not have professional training for sewing nor craft classes (yes I learnt all these from books and internet reference during my kiddos' nap time), these tutorials are amateur work and I shall attempt to improve them from time to time, if time allow..

If you are looking for crafts that you can do with your kiddos at home, check out the Craft 4 Kids page instead.

Hope you find something useful here, feel free to send me your comments and I shall attempt to response soonest possible. Cheers!

How are these classified?
  • Dummies: So easy that you can do it with your eyes closed, or nearly..
  • Easy: No sewing skill required.
  • Moderately Easy: Easy steps, however some basic sewing skill required
  • Intermediate: More Complicated steps, however only  basic sewing skill required
  • Difficult: Complicated steps and more advanced sewing skill required
  • Hard Core: Hmm, I haven't reach that level yet peeps.

My VIP Seat (Dress Up an old IKEA Chair)

I have been making quite a lot of clothes for my little ones and completed several home improvement projects like the seat covers, place mat etc. Finally, it's time to make something for myself.

Here it is, my VIP seat. With 2 tiny yellow *stars*

It's just a home deco cotton cover that I custom made to cover up my old IKEA chair where I do my craft and office work at home. The PVC had peeled off hence it was quite a sorry sight.

Finally, sorry no more. It's now looking pretty and proud in its sporty red stripes :)

I used Velcro tapes for the sides for easy wear on. I gave the cover a wash after sewing then only sewn on the Velcro tape, this ensure it fits on neatly as the fabric may shrinks a little after first time washing.

I made a pocket for the base so the cover will fit on nicely. It's about 6" in depth so will not drop out easily.

The before and after picture. Now I can work like a VIP, yay!

Note:
No tutorial available this time as it was really a trial-and-error attempt. However, if you are keen to give it a try, you need 1 meter of thick cotton or home decor grade textile and approximate 1 meter of Velcro tape. I used felt and bias tapes for the decoration but that is really optional if you have a beautiful prints on the fabric.

Alternative option for Velcro tapes is to use snap on buttons, they shall look really cute too.

Have fun, be crafty!

{Book Review} Me On The Map 地图与我

Now that my little boy had turned 4 years old, I am ready to teach him map reading and basic geography knowledge. Besides, I thought its important he knows where we stay and our contact numbers so he can reach us in event of emergency. Map reading requires the ability to translate visual into a 2-dimensional drawing, hence it maybe to challenging to begin with children of younger age.

When I saw this book among the list of books available from the brochure distributed by his pre-school, I thought it came just handy - Me On The Map.

It relates little one to the surrounding so its easy to understand.

First, it's about me and my room.

Then, it's a map of my house.

Tutorial: Cute Animal Towel Pillow Case (可爱小动物枕头套)

Does your little one has a favorite pillow? Mine has their pirate theme pillows and Peter Pan bedding set made by mommy few months ago, but as we'll be spending a night at grandpa's house this CNY, I decided to sew my little ones towel pillow that is suitable for traveling used.

Here's how the mommy-designed pillow case looks like..

Why use towel? Well, it's soft, comfortable, and as I planned to have an animal face design on the pillowcase, towel provides a good fluffy touch akin soft toy. Of course you may used quilting cotton or other cushion materials, but since I have leftover from the hooded towel I made earlier, they came in just handy. Besides,my little boy has this habit of rubbing his favorite hanky during bedtime, so I sewn on a piece of his favorite hanky as the "tummy", that made him really really excited and I don't have to search for his hanky in the dark anymore, it's definitely a win-win situation for us.

This 1 page pictorial tutorial says it all. Only 3 simple steps to create a really cute and cuddly pillow case for your little darling. :)

I planned the design first on my idea book..

Cut the towels and felt, assembled them according to the design.. I added the pink ears for extra cutie points :)

Wa-la, all done and ready to be cuddled!

My little boy is so in loved with his new pillow case that he hugged it to sleep the very first night after I gave it a wash. One hand on his favorite hanky and one hand hugging the pillow.

The pillow case for my bunny girl was just completed last night and now hanging dry in the back yard. I shall upload the pic later. It has same design with slight twist only. Hope she loves it as much as the little brother..

Wait a minute.. Here it is, the baby girl version bunny pillow case is done. The baby bunny girl and little rat pillows are ready to accompany my duo into dreamland...

In fact, both of them love their new pillow cases so much that they hugged them to sleep every night. These pillows now doubled up as their soft toys too, pretty handy huh..

Now, we are so ready to sleep over anywhere! :)

Interested to make one?
You need the following material:
- 1/2 yard of towel / quilting cotton (1 normal length towel is more than enough to make 2 kid pillows)
- sewing machine and matching color threads.
- some felts or fabric scrap for the facial expression design.
- a pair of scissors
- some sewing pins
- 2 buttons for the open edge (optional)

Happy crafting, if you happened to make one, do feel free to share the photos! :)

How to Make This?
I was just experimenting and used my own method of making this place mat, its just a simple tutorial here. I'm sure there are other better techniques out there somewhere, but feel free to use this as a guide. :)
